The President of the Euro-Atlantic Council of Slovenia, Prof. Dr Iztok Prezelj, participated as a speaker at the roundtable “Breakfast with Experts: Defending Europe: Securing the Western Balkans”, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Austria and the Think Europe think tank.
In the discussion, Prof. Dr Prezelj highlighted the importance of values that have, to some extent, been lost in today’s turbulent international environment, but which need to be restored and strengthened for a stable and secure future. He also addressed the Slovenian public’s attitude towards the Western Balkans and the region’s importance to wider European security.
He underlined two key threats to the stability of the Western Balkans: the risk of uncontrolled domino secessionism and the problem of state capture by narrow, illegitimate criminal-political groups. In the discussion, he also presented proposals for a peaceful, stable and prosperous future of the region.
Prof. Dr Prezelj’s participation in the roundtable represents an important contribution by the Euro-Atlantic Council of Slovenia to the debate on the future of the Western Balkans, European security, and strengthening the resilience of the region in a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.
