Iztok Prezelj, Ph.D., is a Professor and Dean at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of
Ljubljana. The faculty educates future leaders and experts in different areas of political
science, sociology, communication studies and cultural studies. As a Vice-Dean for Scientific
Research in the period 2017-2021, he was directing research process at the Institute of Social
Sciences with 20 research centers. He was also a Head of Defence Studies Department in the
period from 2015-2017. As a guest researcher or lecturer, he visited Princeton University
(2017, 2018, 2019), Leiden University (2017), University of Sarajevo (2012), University of
Vienna (2013, 2015), WEU Institute for Security Studies in Paris (1997), etc. At the George
C. Marshall Center – European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch, he was the Adjunct
Professor in the Programme on Terrorism and Counter-terrorism (PTSS) in 2014. Dr. Prezelj
worked in and with several Slovenian governmental interagency working groups in different
fields of security and lectured on national and international security in the Command and
Staff School of the Slovenian Armed Forces in the period 2000 – 2010 at the General Staff
and Senior Staff levels. He obtained Ph.D. in 2004 at the University of Ljubljana on the topic
of crisis management.

Iztok Prezelj published widely in the fields of national & international security, threat & risk
assessment, crisis management, terrorism & counter-terrorism, comparative defence systems,
critical infrastructure, Western Balkans, etc. He publishes articles, books and lectures also at
the Faculty of Criminal Justice at the University of Maribor. He has directed several national
research projects and headed Slovenian research clusters in the international research projects.
Dr. Prezelj comments regularly on security issues for the national and foreign media.

Dr. Prezelj was a guest researcher or lecturer at the Princeton University, Leiden University,
University of Sarajevo, University of Vienna, WEU Institute for Security Studies, etc. At the
George C. Marshall Center – European Center for Security Studies, he was an Adjunct
Professor in the Programme on terrorism and counter-terrorism (PTSS) in 2014.
Currently, he serves as a member of the editorial boards of the following journals: Risk,
Hazards & Crisis in Public Policy; Journal of Criminal Justice and Security; and journal
Security, Terrorism and Society (Sicurezza, Terrorismo e Società).
